Meal plan information
Students in overflow housing are automatically enrolled for the All-Access 7-Day Meal Plan. To change to the All-Access 5-Day Meal Plan, students should contact Meal Plans.
Overflow housing is a temporary assignment that allows students to live in university-supported accommodations while permanent campus housing assignments are finalized. Students assigned to overflow housing may be assigned to on-campus spaces such as the University Tower lounges or to an off-campus space such as the Hampton Inn Downtown IUPUI.
Yes and no. Some overflow assignments will be located on campus, but some students may be placed at our overflow site that is immediately adjacent to campus.
The timeline varies based on when permanent spaces become available. An overflow assignment could last one week, or it could last until winter break. Housing staff work to transition students into permanent assignments as quickly as possible.
As space becomes available, Housing will reach out to students via their IU email address the Tuesday before their scheduled move to a permanent space. Housing staff will also connect with students in person to ensure they understand their new assignment and have the information needed to complete the transition.
Yes. Students are notified via their IU email that a permanent on-campus housing assignment is available to move into. Students will be notified on Tuesdays and have the following Friday—Sunday to complete the transition to the new location.
Possibly. If there is a price difference between the temporary and permanent assignment rates, an adjustment will be made to the student's bursar account after the move. The daily rate for overflow housing matches the rate charged to students in University Tower, as this is the most likely facility for new assignments. If there is any difference in cost, Housing will notify the student at the time of their move and the bursar charge will be updated with the prorated cost.
Yes. Students living in temporary housing who choose to purchase a parking permit should select the permit associated with their temporary housing assignment. If the facility changes when the student is assigned to their permanent space, Parking and Transportation Services can assist with any necessary permit adjustments. Students assigned to the Hampton Inn will receive complimentary parking at the hotel and do not need to purchase a parking permit while living there. However, students who would like to park on campus may purchase an ST permit.

Due to increased student enrollment and demand for on-campus housing, IU Indianapolis Housing & Residence Life has partnered with the Hampton Inn Indianapolis Downtown IUPUI to provide temporary overflow housing. This allows students to begin the academic year with their peers while permanent on-campus housing becomes available. Students assigned to overflow housing at the off-campus Hampton Inn are expected to follow all university housing policies and procedures while living at the hotel.
The Hampton Inn Downtown IUPUI facility is located at 414 W. Vermont Street, directly across from the campus’s ICTC building and is within walking distance of many university buildings and services. Students can also use the JagLine shuttle to access other buildings across campus.
Housing charges will be billed through the student’s bursar account, just like any other university housing assignment. To simplify billing during the reassignment process, students in overflow housing will be charged at the University Tower housing rate. Students will not make payments directly to the Hampton Inn.
Students assigned to the Hampton Inn will share the room with one roommate, and both students will have their own *queen-sized bed. The room comes equipped with other basic amenities such as dressers, desks, and an en-suite bathroom. Bedding and linens will also be provided during the stay.
*Please note that campus residence hall assignments have a Twin XL mattress, so students should be prepared when it comes time to transition to campus.
Because overflow assignments are temporary, we recommend students bring only what they need for the beginning of the semester. They can bring more items and set up once they have transitioned to their permanent assignment.
Students should can refer to the packing list for residence halls, but note that differences exist in terms of what is provided.
Hampton Inn will provide the following items:
Hampton Inn does not have ethernet ports, so students will not need to bring an ethernet cable.
Each Hampton Inn overflow room comes equipped with a MicroFridge. Once a student moves to their permanent housing assignment, they will have the option to rent a MicroFridge or bring their own refrigerator. Since only one MicroFridge is permitted per room and the combined refrigerator capacity cannot exceed 7 cubic feet, we recommend that students wait until they receive their permanent assignment before making any rental or purchase decisions.
Yes. Students assigned to overflow housing at the off-campus Hampton Inn site will be considered IU Indianapolis housing students and are expected to follow all university housing policies and procedures while living at the hotel.
Hampton Inn will receive packages for IU students beginning August 10, 2026; mail will not be accepted before this date. Students will need to stop by the concierge desk to see if they have any mail or packages. They will need to present a photo ID to receive their mail and packages.

Students assigned to an on-campus University Tower overflow space will be residing in one of the many lounges located on the residential floors in the building. The student lounges are transformed into temporary rooms, which allow students to live on campus while Housing works to accommodate all students during periods of high demand.
The lounge spaces on each floor were formerly hotel suites and are larger than a typical University Tower room. Each has been converted to accommodate 4–5 students and includes the appropriate residence hall–style furnishings for each assigned student. Students can expect a setup similar to a traditional University Tower room, but with additional square footage and a MicroFridge. This includes a bedframe, mattress, desk, desk chair, and dresser.
Lounge spaces may house up to five students.
Yes. Each lounge space includes one private bathroom shared only by the students assigned to that space. The bathroom includes a sink with counter space, a toilet, and a shower, like the private bathroom setup found throughout University Tower resident rooms.
Students may personalize their space within university guidelines. Decorations must not damage walls, furniture, fixtures, or property. Painter’s tape is recommended for any wall decorations. Any damage charges may be billed to the resident responsible.

No. Housekeeping services are not provided, and students should maintain their living space in a respectful and sanitary condition.

Students assigned to a model room overflow assignment will be living in a residence hall room that is normally used to showcase student living spaces during campus visits and housing tours. During periods of high housing demand, these rooms may be assigned to students as temporary housing accommodations. We have one model room in each of our traditional residence hall communities: University Tower, North Hall, and Ball Hall.
The model rooms will feel like a typical room in that particular building, with the same furnishings, layout, and amenities provided to other students—including a MicroFridge for the students’ convenience. This includes a bedframe, mattress, desk, desk chair, and dresser.
No. Model rooms are standard student rooms designated for tours and demonstrations. You will have the same room features and access to building amenities as other students in the community.
Yes. Room occupancy follows the standard room configuration for the assigned space and building. If the room is a double occupancy space, students can expect to have one roommate.
No. Once a model room is assigned to students, it will not be entered by tour groups during their stay.
Probably not. Most of our model rooms do not have an attached bathroom, but students will have access to the community bathrooms on the floor.
Students may personalize their space within university guidelines. Decorations must not damage walls, furniture, fixtures, or property. Painter’s tape is recommended for any wall decorations. Any damage charges may be billed to the resident responsible.

Housing staff will communicate any reassignment information directly to students, including timelines, move instructions, and support resources via their IU email.
Because new assignments depend on another resident moving out, we’re unable to provide a specific timeline for how long a student may remain in temporary overflow housing. Housing staff regularly monitor vacancies and issue new assignments as soon as they become available.
When a permanent assignment is ready, Housing will email the details to the student’s IU address. These notifications are sent on the Tuesday prior to the scheduled move. In addition, Housing staff will connect with students in person to ensure they understand their new assignment and have the information needed to complete the transition.
