In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Women in Technology (WiT) student organization is highlighting the impact of women in STEM through community, mentorship and leadership.
Led by an all-female executive board, the organization brings together students interested in technology, networking and professional growth. While WiT centers and advocates for women in STEM, it welcomes anyone interested in supporting and engaging with a more inclusive tech community.
Through workshops, networking events and mentorship opportunities, the club supports students navigating fields that have been historically male-dominated.
Four members of the Women in Technology leadership team shared what the organization means to them and how students can get involved.
What does being part of Women in Technology mean to you?
Kendall Troy, social media manager:
"Being a part of Women in Tech means building relationships with like-minded women. It’s a group of students who are focused on their academics, professional skills and commitment to kindness and authenticity.
Everyone is open to helping one another and giving advice. Because we often take similar courses, it can be incredibly helpful to have that support system.
Having a community like this on campus is awesome. This semester we are focusing on hosting more events, so it has been great always having something to look forward to."
What has been one of the most impactful events the club hosted this year?
Lissete Rogel, secretary:
"In my opinion, the most influential event we’ve hosted this year was our resume-building workshop. We invited our Career Services assistant director to lead a presentation focused on strategies to give students a competitive edge in the job market.
The presentation covered formatting, highlighting experience effectively, common mistakes and what to avoid. Afterward, students were able to receive one-on-one feedback from our club’s advisor and the assistant director.
In the tech industry, your resume has to stand out among countless applicants. This workshop gave students more confidence and support when preparing their resumes."
How does the club support women entering technology fields?
Millie Jones, vice president:
"The Women in Tech club helps young women feel more confident entering male-dominated fields by providing opportunities for networking and connections with women professionals in the industry.
These opportunities create mentoring relationships and help students better understand how women can achieve success in these fields.
The club also creates a community of students who encourage and support one another."
What events or opportunities are coming up this semester?
Ashley Zimmer, president:
"We always have events planned for the Women in Technology club. This semester, our events are primarily held bi-weekly on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m.
Our next event will focus on graduate students sharing their experiences and offering guidance to undergraduate students about graduate school and academic life.
After that, we are planning to host a technology-cleaning workshop where anyone can join us to dust off their keyboards, clean their phone screens and learn how to maintain their devices.
As a club, we're always looking for more technology and career-focused to engage with our campus community. The best way to get involved is to attend our events, which are usually posted on The Spot about two weeks in advance. Students can also follow us on Instagram for updates."
