October is Domestic Violence Prevention Month

Prevention is possible

All students belong on our campus, and we have a responsibility to each other to make campus a safe place. Let's talk about it, learn from each other, and create culture change at IU Indianapolis.

Come out and support DVPM events like Purple Night and the Ooky Spooky Halloween Ball going on this month.

Signs of a healthy relationship

Healthy relationships bring out the best in you and make you feel good about yourself. A healthy relationship does not mean a "perfect relationship." In order to have a healthy relationship, you have to love yourself first. Some characteristics and behaviors of a healthy relationship are:

  • Comfortable pace
  • Honesty
  • Respect
  • Kindness
  • Healthy conflict
  • Trust
  • Independence
  • Equality
  • Taking responsibility
  • Fun

Signs of an unhealthy relationship

While everyone does unhealthy things sometimes, we can all learn to love better by recognizing unhealthy signs and shifting to healthy behaviors. If you see unhealthy signs in your relationship, it's important to not ignore them and understand they can escalate to abuse. If you think you are in a dangerous situation, trust your gut and get help. Some characteristics and behaviors of an unhealthy relationship are:

  • Intensity
  • Manipulation
  • Sabatoge
  • Guilting
  • Possessiveness
  • Isolation
  • Belittling
  • Volatility
  • Deflecting responsibility
  • Betrayal
