From Residents Assistants to Campus Center Info Desk team members to fitness instructors, students are key to helping Student Affairs serve the Jaguar community. In fall 2023, 288 student employees were hired across eight of our units. Last semester, Housing and Residence Life, the Campus Center and Campus Recreation made up the largest proportions of student employees, supervising 83% of student hires.
Through these on-campus jobs, student employees grow their leadership skills by running projects, gain customer service experience and create valuable connections with other staff and student team members.
All 17 of our schools were represented in our student employee population, highlighting how the skills learned while working with Student Affairs is applicable to a variety of jobs.
Of the Campus Center student employees surveyed last academic year, 89% of them agreed that they were able to relate student employment experiences to their future careers.
As the hub of student life, Student Affairs looks to offer Jaguars valuable experiences — including on-campus jobs and internships — to help them prepare for what’s next after college.
What student employees had to say
Hanna McKenna, Connection Ambassador
"Working for the Division of Student Affairs helped me find my place here. It was hard during my first year, 2020–21 school year, to make connections on campus, but being hired as a Connection Ambassador at The CUBE helped me find some of my best friends and develop valuable skills that I can use even after graduating in just a few months. I am also thankful to have a team and professional staff that are supportive of each other and of our work."
Mounisha Madala, Campus Center Info Desk team member
"Professionally, I’ve developed my skills in communication, problem solving, teamwork and time management. Being able to assist individuals and contribute to a positive campus experience for visitors and members of the university community is immensely rewarding. This experience left me with fond memories and valuable skills that I will carry forward into my future endeavors."
Faith Atkins, Game Room employee
"During my time as a student employee, I have been able to learn so much about interacting with other students, troubleshooting issues in an efficient manner and dealing with hard situations to the best of my ability. I have enjoyed being able to connect with the other employees, managers and supervisors.
The group events have been very fun and are a nice break away from the work-life balance. I encourage others to work here and experience the different roles for themselves!"
Emily Veenstra, Civic Engagement Area Manager for JagsVote
"Since Fall 2021, I have had the privilege of working alongside an exceptional team of student employees and professional staff within Student Affairs. Our collaboration has yielded remarkable results that I am truly proud of.
Our research initiatives, led by the JagsVote team, have earned IU Indianapolis recognition as one of the All In Democracy Challenge's ‘Most Engaged Campus for College Student Voting.’ Contributing to this achievement has been incredibly rewarding.
The guidance and encouragement from professional staff have played a significant role in Civic Engagement initiatives' success and I have cherished every moment of my journey here. Now with elections on the horizon, I am excited to continue our efforts and make a difference once again!"
Lauren Rutter, Multimedia Production Center student designer
"My time interning for the division has been an incredible experience. Each project offers a chance to work with mentors, peers and clients to contribute to the campus community. It is really special to see my work around campus, but it’s even more meaningful to have an insight into how much the division cares about the student experience. Before interning, I didn’t realize how many resources and opportunities were available, but I feel like part of a community that I’m proud of now."
Thia Brettnacher, Campus Center Info Desk team member
"Working at the Campus Center has been one of the highlights of my semester. Everyone is welcoming to newcomers and it's an amazing environment to be in.
Throughout my time here I have been able to learn how to expand my communication skills with handling phone calls and conversing with my peers, and acquire better time management between work, school and my social life."
