Preparing for Move-out

Get ready for move-out day

The move-out deadline for the academic year is May 11 at noon. Please take a moment to follow these steps for a successful move-out.

Sign-ups for a required check-out time open April 14. Register for a time by selecting your residence hall below.

Check-out appointments begin May 4.

Leaving before May 4? Visit your building’s
community desk staff for assistance with your check-out.

Every community holds a mandatory closing meeting. Times and locations will be posted on your RA’s move-out bulletin board. If you can’t attend your RA’s meeting, you can join another meeting in your community.

At the meeting, you and your roommates will complete the Resident Responsibility form, which helps determine responsibility for damages and cleaning tasks.

If the form isn’t completed, any incurred charges will be split evenly among all roommates.

Cleaning supplies and carts will be available at the community desks starting mid-April. Avoid damages for outstanding maintenance concerns by submitting a work order before you leave.

Common charges for damages and cleaning include:

  • Excessive cleaning: $50+ per item/room
  • Trash removal: $50+
  • Furniture removal: $50
  • Damaged, dirty, or missing furniture: $35-$600
  • Wall/ceiling damage: $50 (patch)/$100 (paint)
  • Damaged floor: $50
  • Tampered smoke detector: $100
  • DO NOT remove 3M hooks, hanging strips, or LED light strips. Pulling them
off can cause damage, and you may be charged.

For a full list of damage charges, review our Residential Policies.

  • Riverwalk residents, please be sure to return your bedroom and mailbox keys.
  • Donation boxes will be available in every community for clothing, small appliances, and unopened, unexpired food (which will go to Paws’ Pantry).
  • Trash and non-donatable items must go into designated dumpsters — do not leave them in the hallways, lounges, or trash rooms.
  • Stop by the community desk to check for any mail or packages. Riverwalk residents, check your mailbox.
  • Change your address with USPS to forward mail to your new location.
  • Update your shipping address for online orders (Amazon, Shein, etc).
  • Any mail received after May 11 will be returned to sender.

Extensions and summer housing

Extensions are only granted for extenuating circumstances and must be requested by April 28. If you need to stay after May 11, email reslife@iu.edu as soon as possible.

Graduating? Check your inbox for our graduation confirmation email for details on
graduation-related extension requests. The deadline to submit these requests is April 11.

All residents should submit a change of address form before leaving campus.

Summer housing applications are available via StarRez at go.iu.edu/myhousing.

Housing is limited and only available in select Riverwalk Apartment buildings, so you may need to relocate depending on your current assignment. If you have a summer contract, you won’t need to move out by May 11. Instead, stay in your current space until you receive relocation instructions.
