University Tower is undergoing its first major update since it became a part of IU Indianapolis in 2013. What was once a hotel and conference center was converted into a residence hall and now houses around 700 first-year students each year.
Students living on floors 6, 8, 9 and 10 can look forward to new interiors when they arrive in August.
"It became clear that the finishes in Tower and aesthetics of the spaces needed refreshed to meet student expectations, and we are excited to finish renovations over the next year," said Mike Perry, associate dean of students and director of Housing and Residence Life.
All the flooring in the hallways was removed, and new carpet is being installed. Each student room is getting new flooring, wallpaper removed, walls refinished, new tub surrounds in the bathrooms, and refinishing bathroom ceilings. In the summer of 2022, the team removed wallpaper in the hallways and repainted.
New blackout curtains, which are made at IU Bloomington’s upholstery shop, are also being installed in each student room. Previous curtains could at times decrease the flow of heated and cool air, and the new curtains will allow for a more comfortable living experience for students. Doors were removed from the closets to allow for more space for students to store and organize their things.
"It is important to ensure students feel comfortable in their space and can spend their time focused on academics, getting involved and connecting with campus life," said Perry.
Floors 3, 4, 5 and 7 will receive the same updates in summer 2025.
