If you’re looking for a job that goes beyond just earning a paycheck and allows for personal growth and connection, working as a facilities assistant (FA) with Housing and Residence Life might be a great fit for you.

Developing leadership

One of the biggest surprises for me has been how much I’ve grown as a leader. I often coordinate with my team to tackle unexpected repairs, like fixing broken fixtures or responding to maintenance requests from residents.

Taking the initiative to organize these tasks and ensuring everything is completed efficiently has significantly boosted my confidence. It’s rewarding to see the immediate impact of our work, whether it’s a well-maintained common area or a resolved issue that brightens a resident’s day.

Empowering peers and building community

Another rewarding aspect of this job is the opportunity to help fellow students. I frequently receive requests for advice on maintenance-related problems, such as fixing a broken blind or troubleshooting a leak. Guiding others through these issues not only helps them feel more at home, but also eases the stress of living independently in a college environment. I’ve enjoyed building relationships with residents and fellow students, knowing that my assistance makes a difference in their daily lives.

Navigating personal and professional growth

Working as an FA has greatly contributed to my personal and professional development. Each day presents new challenges, whether it’s managing multiple work orders or adapting to last-minute changes. I’ve sharpened my time management and problem-solving skills, which I know will be beneficial in my future endeavors.

The camaraderie within the FA team makes the job enjoyable too! We often share laughs while tackling challenges together, creating a positive atmosphere. If you’re seeking a role that offers hands-on experience, personal development, and the chance to make a real difference on campus, I encourage you to consider becoming an FA. It has been a fulfilling experience for me, and I believe you will find it just as rewarding!
