IU Indianapolis has been recognized with the inaugural Illuminary Campus of the Year award from the Indiana Collegiate Action Network (ICAN) for its innovative mental health promotion and substance use prevention efforts.
This award highlights the collaborative work of two Student Affairs units — Health and Wellness Promotion (HWP) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) — in supporting students’ well-being and creating a culture of care.
A collaborative approach to wellness
This recognition reflects the efforts of our university to address wellness challenges through strategic partnerships and campus-wide coordination. Programs like the Prevention Peer Education Program (PPEP) and the Empowered Choices online curriculum, which address alcohol, drug use and sexual misconduct, showcase the campus’ commitment to prevention.
"We’ve taken a very collaborative approach to partner on programs and coordinate across offices, thanks in part to the IU Indianapolis Wellness Coalition and our Campus Wellness Framework," said Eric Teske, Director of Health and Wellness Promotion.
Reducing stigma and building belonging
CAPS played a critical role in earning the award, supported by a $15,000 ICAN mini-grant for the 2023–24 academic year.
This funding allowed CAPS to launch a mental health stigma reduction campaign that included interactive presentations, social media outreach and events such as Suicide Prevention Awareness and Fresh Check Day.
These initiatives led to the development of Jag Culture, an effort focused on reducing mental health stigma and promoting violence prevention across campus.
"Jag Culture is a way of being on our campus," said Brittany Snyder, Assistant Director of Outreach and Community Services. "It upholds the values of supporting one another, creating a sense of belonging and keeping campus a safe place for everyone."
A meaningful recognition
The Illuminary Campus of the Year award celebrates the significant contributions of students and staff in advancing mental health and prevention initiatives. It recognizes the ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and safe.
Teske described the recognition as "incredibly validating and a great honor," emphasizing the impact of their collaborative efforts.
Snyder, noted that the award strengthens ongoing efforts. "It empowers the continuation of Jag Culture," she said. "Promoting mental health well-being and a culture of care for everyone at IU Indianapolis."
