Know Your Status event reaches 5,000 free HIV/STI tests

In a significant milestone, the monthly Know Your Status testing event administered its 5,000th free test on January 16. This milestone reflects the program's continued commitment to providing accessible and free HIV and STI testing to students — fostering a culture of sexual health awareness and combating stigma.

Since 2011, Know Your Status — organized by Health and Wellness Promotion in partnership with local health organizations — has provided free, no-appointment testing. Collaborators like the Bell Flower Clinic, Damien Center and the Marion County Public Health Department make comprehensive screenings available to students at no cost or insurance requirement.

Public presence and private results

Held in the Campus Center Atrium, a central and accessible location, the testing event has evolved into both a public service and an awareness campaign.

"Getting screened for HIV and STIs should be seen just like any other routine health check, such as for blood pressure or cholesterol," said Eric Teske, director of Health and Wellness Promotion.

"Our goal is to remove the shame surrounding sexual health and empower students to take control of their health in a judgment-free space."

While testing takes place in a public setting, all confidential results are delivered by phone directly from the testing agency to the individual.

Peer insights: Learning through service

The event’s impact is clear from the experiences of its Peer Health Educators. Melanie Reyes described her experience as "eye-opening from beginning to end," noting that the event connects students with valuable resources and sparks important conversations about sexual health.

Peer Health Educator Tanasja Poston stated that the event is "the most important event when working with Health and Wellness Promotion," highlighting how free, confidential testing empowers students to take control of their health.

Additional health and wellness resources

In addition to testing, Health and Wellness Promotion provides a range of free resources to support student well-being. The Safer Sex Supplies program offers essential protective materials, and additional initiatives like locking pill bottles and conversation cards further promote safe practices on campus.

A promising future

Since its inception, the program has steadily expanded, offering a vital resource for students who may not have easy access to healthcare services. The 5,000th test marks not only a key achievement, but also an optimistic future for collaboration between IU Indianapolis and the city's vast network of community health resources.

Know Your Status events are held on the first Thursday of the month during the academic year. For more information, email Health and Wellness Promotion at hwpindy@iu.edu.
