Starting college can be overwhelming. From navigating class schedules to understanding what resources your campus has to offer, the transition often comes with a steep learning curve. IU Indianapolis student Darius Lewis knows that feeling firsthand.
That’s why he created "Darius College Steps to Success" — a podcast packed with real talk, helpful tips and honest stories to help students take on college with confidence.
Getting to know Darius
Originally from Merrillville, Ind., Darius is now a senior completing his bachelor’s degree in English Education and English Studies. He chose IU Indianapolis primarily because of its Olaniyan Scholars Program, which his brother recommended.
The program supports students from underrepresented backgrounds, helping them develop leadership skills and succeed in the classroom. “The program has kept me on the track to success,” Darius said, reflecting on his decision to attend the university.
Reflecting on his early college experience, Darius admits that while he got good grades, he felt lost and unsure of where he fit in. He would see flyers advertising events and opportunities, but none sparked his interest.
"I struggled with finding opportunities, and I think that's because I sheltered myself and didn't go out to get them," he said.
It wasn’t until later in his college journey that Darius began to think back on these challenges and how he could share his experiences with others in similar situations.
Creating connection through humor and honesty
In October 2024, Darius decided to turn his reflections into a podcast. It covers topics from building connections with professors to discovering campus resources, all delivered with Darius’ signature humor and honest storytelling.
“The most rewarding part is being able to talk openly and transparently with my viewers about the positives and negatives of college,” said Darius. "I enjoy speaking, and this platform allows me to use my voice and manage it the way I want."
His listeners include current students, prospective students, adults seeking degrees and even staff members who’ve become fans. Darius also takes topic suggestions from friends to keep his content fresh and relevant.
“Each episode offers a different perspective, so by the time I’m all done with it, there will be something for everyone,” Darius said.
A journey of growth at IU Indianapolis
Throughout his time at IU Indianapolis, Darius has grown as both a student and a leader. Initially feeling lost, he eventually found his community and built strong relationships with mentors who challenged and encouraged him. Darius credits his success to surrounding himself with the right people who pushed him to grow and step out of his comfort zone.
"People only see the product — but I’m proud of the process that got me here," Darius said, reflecting on how far he has come. He acknowledges that while success might seem straightforward from the outside, the journey itself was full of challenges and growth.
Advice for new students
Darius encourages students to take initiative — both inside and outside the classroom. "Take college one day at a time. Plan accordingly, but also be prepared to adjust on the fly, especially if you have a busy schedule," he advised.
He also stresses the importance of building connections early. "Networking is extremely important because you’ll need letters of recommendation in the future for internships, scholarships and jobs," he said. "You never know who might be able to help you down the road."
And perhaps most importantly: "Go out and have fun! You only experience undergraduate life once, so make the most of it. Try new things, meet new people and explore what the campus has to offer. Just make sure you walk away with that degree — that’s the most important part."
What’s next
This spring, Darius will graduate and head to IU Bloomington to pursue a master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs.
"My podcast and my experiences helped me figure out where I wanted to land," he said. "I’ve always known I wanted to do something in education, but now I know how I want to make an impact."
With his podcast growing and his next chapter just beginning, Darius Lewis is determined to keep guiding students — one episode at a time.
